Form
X は Yです。 X is Y.
・“は” is a topic marker
・“です” works like the English verb “be”
わたし の しゅみ は どくしょ です。 – My hobby is reading.
X も Y です。 X is also Y.
・ “も” means “also / too”.
・ It replaces “は” when you add yourself to the same topic.
わたし も がくせい です。– I am also a student.
わたし の しゅみ も どくしょ です。 -My hobby is also reading.
A と B A and B
・“と” means “and”.
・ It connects two or more nouns.
わたし の しゅみ は テニス と えいが です。-My hobbies are tennis and movie.
Notes / Common Mistakes
- “と” can only connect nouns. It cannot connect sentences.
- “Me too” is said as “わたしも” in Japanese.
Incorrect example: わたし は にほんじん です と がくせいです。-I am Japanese and a student.
→”と” cannot connetc sentences. To connect sentences, use ”それから”
