たんじょうび は いつ ですか。

When is your birthday?

わたしの たんじょうびは 10がつ 15にちです。

My birthday is October 15th.

Form

Number + さい です。  (I’m) + Number + years old.

・Some numbers have irregular pronunciation.
For example, 1さい is pronounced いっさい.

・Please refer to the chart below for more details.

25さい です。 – I am 25 years old.

30(さんじゅっ)さいです。 – I am 30 years old.

M月(がつ) + D日(にち) (Month) + (Date)  

・Some months have irregular pronunciation.
For example, 9月 is pronounced くがつ (kugatsu) in Japanese.
・Dates are pronounced even more irregularly.

わたし の たんじょうび は 8月(はちがつ)11日(じゅういちにち)です。 – My Birthday is August 11th.

テスト は  4月(しがつ) 5日(いつか)です。 – The test is on April 5th.

Notes / Common Mistakes

  • Japanese numbers + counters often have irregular pronunciations.
    Make sure to carefully check the correct pronunciation when saying your age or dates.
  • Be careful with the order of months and days.
    In Japanese, the order is different from English, so don’t mix them up.
