Form

X は Yです。  X is Y.

・“は” is a topic marker
・“です” works like the English verb “be”

わたし は かおり です。 – I am Kaori.

すずきさん は がくせい です。 – Suzuki-san is a student.

X は Yです  Is X Y? (Question sentence)

・“か” is used at the end of a sentence to make a question
・It works like a question mark (?)

すずきさん は がくせい です。 – Is Suzuki-san a student?

げんきです– How are you?

X は Yじゃありません。  X isn’t Y. (Negative sentence)

・The negative form of “〜です” is “じゃありません”

わたしは がくせい じゃありません。– I am not a student.

わたしは かいしゃいん じゃありません。 – I am not a business person.

Noun1 の Noun2  Noun2 of Noun1. (of-structure)

・“の” shows a relationship between two nouns

かおりせんせい は にほんご の せんせいです。 – Kaori-sensei is a Japanese language teacher.

わたし は にほんごがっこう の がくせいです。 -I am a student of Japanese language school. 

Notes / Common Mistakes

  • Don’t repeat “わたしは” many times if the subject is already clear.
  • “あなた (the word for “you” in English) ” can sound rude in Japanese. Instead, we use the person’s name to be polite.
  • If you are not sure, just omit the subject.

(わたしは) かおり です。 – I am Kaori.

ジョンさん は がくせいですか。 – John, are you a student?
